Nutrient excretion by fish supports a variable but significant proportion of lake primary productivity over 15 years

چکیده

Animals play an important and sometimes overlooked role in nutrient cycling. The of animals cycling is spatially temporally variable, but few studies have evaluated the long-term importance animal-mediated meeting demand by primary producers. We quantified proportion phytoplankton (phosphorus, P) met excretion gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) a eutrophic reservoir where this species dominates fish biomass. From 2000 to 2014, supported variable P demand, averaging 7–27% among years over growing season (spring summer). Temporal patterns emerged, as consistently higher during summer (mean 31%) than spring (8%). In spring, from was best predicted population biomass, stream discharge, temperature. summer, only biomass young-of-year (YOY) shad. Thus, variation YOY significantly alters supply, future should explore animal dynamics Our study shows that several data are needed perform critical evaluation ecosystem demand.

Nutrient cycling by fish supports relatively more primary production as lake productivity increases.

Animals can be important in nutrient cycling in particular ecosystems, but few studies have examined how this importance varies along environmental gradients. In this study we quantified the nutrient cycling role of an abundant detritivorous fish species, the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), in reservoir ecosystems along a gradient of ecosystem productivity. Gizzard shad feed mostly on sedim...

Regulation of Lake Primary Productivity by Food Web Structure.

We performed whole-lake manipulations of fish populations to test the hypothesis that higher trophic levels regulate zooplankton and phytoplankton community structure, biomass, and primary productivity. The study involved three lakes and spanned 2 yr. Results demonstrated hierarchical control of primary production by abiotic factors and a trophic cascade involving fish predation. In Paul Lake, ...

Developing UPPAAL over 15 years

Uppaal is a tool suitable for model checking real-time systems described as networks of timed automata communicating by channel synchronizations and extended with integer variables. Its first version was released in 1995 and its development is still very active. It now features an advanced modelling language, a user-friendly graphical interface, and a performant model checker engine. In additio...

Nutrient recycling by Tropheus brichardi across a littoral productivity gradient in Lake Tanganyika Student:

Nutrient recycling occurs when nutrients are released into the environment by animals or microbial consumers. Fishmediated nutrient recycling is an important source of nutrients for primary producers in many aquatic ecosystems, sometimes even exceeding external loading rates (Attayde and Hansson 2001). Consumers release non-assimilated nutrients as liquid waste that is available to primary prod...

Drivers of Productivity Trends in Cork Oak Woodlands over the Last 15 Years

Higher biodiversity leads to more productive ecosystems which, in turn, supports more biodiversity. Ongoing global changes affect ecosystem productivity and, therefore, are expected to affect productivity-biodiversity relationships. However, the magnitude of these relationships may be affected by baseline biodiversity and its lifeforms. Cork oak (Quercus suber) woodlands are a highly biodiverse...
